I do not know you, and I often struggle to understand him, but he is not hurt by your choices. He is confused, and he seeks to know how best to be a supportive father.

I'm glad to hear that. I respect Lord Beitang's perspective on these matters very much.

One last piece of advice from me. Don't feel guilty about hurting him over this. That won't help, and it's not what happened. He's confused, and he's afraid that he's failed you. Help him to understand that love is never a failing.
